Neuser urges EU to take responsibility Saharawi human rights

The EU must take responsibility for failing to protect human rights and international law in territory illegally occupied by Morocco, Norbert Neuser, president of the Intergroup Western Sahara in the European Parliament, has said. In any new EU-Morocco Fisheries arrangement, Parliament will insist that the rights of Saharawi people must be respected.

On 2 February, the Intergroup Western Sahara of the European Parliament met to discuss recent developments regarding the EU-Morocco Fisheries Agreement. In December, Parliament rejected the EU-Morocco Fisheries Agreement, sending a clear message in favour of international law, Neuser said. The rejection thus called on the Commission to negotiate a new, more environmentally and economically beneficial deal, which will ideally take into account interests of the Sahrawi population. The protocol that had been in place since February ceased when Parliament delivered its negative vote.

Next, Parliament will invite Christopher Ross, UN envoy to Western Sahara, for a dialogue with the committee of Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament. It also intends to send an ad hoc delegation to the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria, Neuser said, along with organising a meeting Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva to discuss the humanitarian situation of the Saharawi people.
