An additional €23 million will be needed to cover the basic needs of the 165,000 Sahrawi refugees in the Western Sahara, according to the European Parliament's Intergroup Western Sahara.
The refugees have been living in four refugee camps for 36 years. The European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection and United Nations High Commission for Refugees have provided humanitarian relief to the Sahrawi people, but this year will only be able to give €8.7m of the €32m needed for the camps.
As a result of this deficiency in funding, the Intergroup Western Sahara received a Sahrawi Red Crescent delegation early this week in Algeria to discuss the situation and humanitarian crisis of the refugees.
In addition, the group will meet with International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva to urge the EU to implement measures to improve the living conditions of the refugees in the Western Sahara.
