Germany arrests Moroccan in Berlin on suspicion of spying - Monsters and Critics

Karlsruhe, Germany - German authorities arrested a 56-year-old Moroccan man in Berlin on Wednesday on suspicion of spying on activists of Frente Polisario, a group seeking the independence of Western Sahara.

Federal prosecutors in Karlsruhe said police searched his home, as well as the homes and offices of two other suspects and a clubroom.

The likely charge against him would be espionage.

The man, who had both Moroccan and German nationality, was suspected of passing information to the Moroccan intelligence service about Frente Polisario. The Western Sahara group opposes Moroccan control of the territory, which was previously a Spanish colony.

Last week, German authorities arrested two men in Berlin, also on espionage charges. They were accused of monitoring Syrian opposition activists and reporting on them to the Syrian embassy in Berlin.
